Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The New York Owner’s Guide

If your Linear keypad has gone dark or your intercom crackles more than it talks, we can usually get it diagnosed and replaced the same day in New York. Most Linear keypad and intercom repairs on residential gates run $225 – $465 parts and labor, depending on whether we’re swapping a keypad, a phone-line intercom module, or the entire wireless receiver assembly. You’ll get the price in writing before we touch a single wire.

Call (845) 259-0242

Here’s the scene we see every week: the gate still opens with a remote, but the keypad outside the driveway stopped responding. Or the intercom rings inside the house, but the audio fades to nothing when someone presses the call button at the curb. Sometimes it’s weather that did it, sometimes it’s age. Linear equipment is rugged, but New York winters and salt air near the water expose every weak connection eventually.

Key takeaways:

  • We stock Linear-compatible keypads (the AK-11 and AP-5 style housings are the two you’ll see most in New York) and can usually match your existing wiring without re-running cable.
  • Installed replacement pricing is quoted in writing before work starts, and the repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise.
  • We’re an independent service provider, not a Linear dealership, so we’re free to recommend the right part for your system rather than whatever we’re contractually obligated to push.

Dean Prescott, our owner, started in this trade through a sheet metal and welding program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before moving his tools east. He’ll tell you flat out: “Tell me what the gate is doing – or not doing – and I’ll give you a real number before we hang up.” That’s not a slogan. It’s how we run the phones.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear’s keypad and intercom line splits into two rough categories: the standalone wireless keypads that sit on a gooseneck or post near the gate, and the hardwired intercom or telephone-entry systems mounted at the property line. The most common keypads we replace in New York are the AK-11 (single-channel, one gate) and the AP-5 (flush-mount, often paired with older swing gate operators). If you lift the faceplate or look at the back of the unit, you’ll find a small paper label with the model number and a date stamp. That label matters: it tells us the exact frequency and channel count, and it tells us whether we can reuse your existing wiring or need to pull a new low-voltage line.

For intercoms, we service the Linear AE-series and the older PBX-style telephone entry units that still hug the brickwork on pre-2010 New York apartment buildings. The compatibility gotcha to know: Linear changed its radio protocol over the years, so a keypad from 2008 won’t always pair with a receiver from 2023. A lot of DIY replacements fail because the new keypad uses a different modulation than the old receiver. We confirm matching frequencies before ordering or installing anything.

We stock OEM Linear parts where they’re still available, and we also keep a small shelf of proven aftermarket equivalents for common models. Aftermarket is fine for basic keypad housings and rubber membranes. For the RF transmitter board itself, we use Linear OEM parts whenever we can, because the aftermarket boards occasionally drift off frequency after a few New York freeze-thaw cycles.

We also carry parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems, so if you have a second gate or a different brand on the property, one visit usually covers everything.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move. Usually a dead transmitter board inside the keypad or a receiver that’s lost its programming. The keypad looks fine, but it’s broadcasting nothing. We test the signal at the receiver before replacing anything.
  • Buttons need to be pressed hard or multiple times. The rubber membrane behind the buttons wears out. New York weather accelerates it: summer heat hardens the rubber, then January cold makes it crack. A new membrane is a cheap fix, but the keypad has to be opened to do it right.
  • Intercom audio crackles or cuts out mid-sentence. Corroded terminal connections or a failing speaker. On older Linear intercoms, the speaker cone dries out and the voice coil separates. We replace the speaker module rather than patching it.
  • The intercom rings but no audio passes in either direction. This points to the audio relay or a broken wire pair between the call station and the house. Sometimes it’s a rodent chewed section of cable in the conduit. We trace the line before condemning the unit.
  • Water inside the keypad face or condensation behind the lens. The gasket at the back of the housing has failed. Moisture inside a Linear keypad corrodes the circuit board fast. Once you see condensation, the clock is ticking.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the straight pricing picture for New York. A basic Linear-compatible keypad replacement runs $225 – $340 installed, which includes the keypad, matching it to your receiver, and sealing the housing properly. If the keypad needs a new gooseneck post or the wiring from the operator to the pad has failed, expect a bit more for the extra labor and wire. Intercom repairs typically land between $285 – $465 depending on whether we’re replacing a speaker module, a relay board, or the full call station.

Repair Type Typical Installed Price (New York)
Keypad replacement (AK-11 or equivalent) $225 – $340
Keypad + new wiring run $320 – $440
Intercom speaker module replacement $285 – $410
Full call station replacement (hardwired) $380 – $465

Every price is quoted in writing before we start. You’ll see the part cost and the labor separated on the invoice, and you’ll sign off on that number before any work begins. If the repair fails within 365 days, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s stamped on the invoice, not just mentioned in a brochure.

DIY or Call Us?

These are low-voltage systems, so changing a Linear keypad is not the same danger as wrestling a garage spring or rewiring a panel. That said, there are two places DIY gate keypad work goes wrong in New York. First, the compatibility issue we mentioned: if the radio frequency doesn’t match your receiver, the new keypad will never pair, and you can’t always tell from the outside of the box. Second, weatherproofing. A keypad that’s not sealed properly at the housing will work fine through the fall and die the first time a nor’easter drives rain sideways into the gasket.

What you can safely check: the model label, the wiring behind the keypad for obvious corrosion or loose wire nuts, and the receiver’s LED when you press the keypad buttons. If the receiver blinks, the keypad is transmitting; if it doesn’t, the problem is in the keypad or the wiring between them. After that, we’d recommend calling us before you buy a part online and guess wrong. Call (845) 259-0242, describe the symptoms, and we’ll give you a real price range over the phone.
