Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication: The New York Owner’s Guide

Welding and fabrication work on a Ghost Controls gate system in New York typically runs $350 to $900 installed, depending on whether we’re repairing a cracked gate frame, rebuilding a bent hinge mount, or fabricating a new post bracket. Most jobs are completed same-day once we’re on site, and we carry the steel stock, welder, and fabrication tools on the truck to handle it. The way most New York owners discover they need this is simple: the gate starts sagging, the operator strains, and on closer inspection, a weld has cracked or a mounting point has torn away from the post.

We’re an independent service company, not affiliated with Ghost Controls, but we work on their systems weekly. The welding side of a gate job is rarely about the operator itself. It’s about the steel around it: the gate frame, the post brackets, the hinge supports, the mounting plate the actuator bolts to. When that steel fails, the operator fails shortly after. We fix the steel first, then remount the operator so everything lines up the way Ghost Controls designed it to.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Welding and fabrication work applies to every Ghost Controls residential swing and slide gate system, but the specifics vary by series. The Ghost Controls AXP1, AXP2, and DS1 series operators mount to a steel post bracket or gate frame plate, and those are the parts that crack under repeated load. On slide gates, the rack-and-pinion track itself can pull loose, especially on heavier gates. On swing gates, the hinge bolts and actuator mounting tabs take the beating.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing before you buy any bracket or mounting plate: Ghost Controls actuator arms have a specific bolt-pattern measurement. The AXP series uses a different arm-end fitting than the older AXDP series, which we still see on gates throughout New York. If you order a generic weld-on bracket without matching that bolt pattern, the actuator won’t seat correctly and the gate will bind. We measure the bolt pattern on site before we weld anything. That’s also where the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision comes in. For the operator internals, we stick with genuine Ghost Controls parts. For weld-on brackets, posts, and reinforcement plates, quality aftermarket steel is often stronger than the original thin-gauge factory bracket, and we tell you which one makes sense once we see the gate.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate sags at the free end. This usually means a hinge weld is cracking or the hinge post itself has shifted. The Ghost Controls operator keeps pushing, but every cycle widens the crack until the gate scrapes the ground or fails to close.
  • A loud popping or groaning sound during travel. That’s often a weld flexing under load. It hasn’t broken yet, but the sound means metal fatigue has started, and New York winters accelerate it.
  • The actuator mount plate is loose or visibly bent. The operator can’t push straight when its base plate moves. The gears inside the actuator wear unevenly, and you’ll eventually hear grinding from inside the unit itself.
  • Rust bleeding from a weld joint. This is common along Queens and Brooklyn coastal areas where salt air works into the welds first. The joint weakens from the inside out, and a gate that looks solid can snap a weld on the next cycle.
  • The gate drags mid-swing and the operator reverses. Ghost Controls operators have an obstruction sensor. When a bent or cracked hinge changes the gate’s arc, the sensor trips and reverse the gate. The fix is in the steel, not the control board.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what welding and fabrication work on a Ghost Controls gate costs in New York, installed, with a written price before we start:

  • Cracked weld repair (single joint): $350 to $550. Includes grinding out the failed weld, re-welding, and reinforcing the joint with a gusset plate where needed.
  • Hinge replacement or rebuild (both hinges): $450 to $700. We cut off the old hinges, weld new ones to the gate and post, and realign the gate before remounting the actuator.
  • Post bracket or actuator mounting plate fabrication: $500 to $800. We build a heavier plate than the factory bracket, bolt or weld it in place, and remount the operator to factory spec.
  • Gate frame reinforcement (twisted or sagging frame): $600 to $900. This is common on older iron gates that have seen years of New York temperature swings and road salt.

The price you get before we begin is the price you pay. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee: a written number before any work starts, a real arrival window, a clean job site when we leave, and a 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing on the invoice. If a weld we make fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can safely check the welds yourself with a flashlight and a close look: cracked paint at a joint, rust weeping from a seam, a hinge bolt that moves when the gate moves. That’s good information to have when you call. What we don’t recommend is grinding and re-welding a gate yourself. Welding on a gate that’s under torsion load is dangerous. One cut in the wrong place can release the gate’s weight suddenly, and a home welder rarely has the amperage to get proper penetration on gate steel. We’ve seen plenty of New York gates where a well-meaning homeowner’s welds cracked again within weeks because the metal wasn’t prepped right.

Dean Prescott learned this trade through sheet metal and welding at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before moving his tools east, and he’s spent years working gates all over New York, from courtyard entries in Jackson Heights to loading-dock sliders in the Meatpacking District. Tell me what the gate is doing – or not doing – and I’ll give you a real number before we hang up. If you’re seeing cracks, sag, or flex at any joint, call us at (845) 259-0242.
