We stock and install DoorKing access control systems across New York, with most installations running between $650 and $1,850 depending on the model, wiring condition, and whether we’re adding keypads, card readers, or telephone entry. We carry DoorKing-compatible parts on our trucks, so if your board failed or your keypad quit responding, we can usually get you back online the same day. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: the gate stops opening for the delivery driver, an employee’s code quits working, or the intercom goes silent while the gate still moves fine on its own.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
DoorKing builds access control around a few workhorse series you’ll see all over New York: the 1830-series telephone entry systems, the 1812 and 1814 keypad units, and the 6050/6100 swing gate operators that pair with them. The compatibility gotcha that trips people up is the board revision. A DoorKing 1834 from 2012 won’t accept the same plug-in relay board as a 2020 unit, even though the housing looks identical. Before we order anything, Dean checks the model sticker inside the cabinet and the board’s revision number so we don’t hand you a part that sort of fits.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for DoorKing circuit boards and power supplies, we recommend factory DoorKing parts. The aftermarket replacements we’ve tested don’t hold up to the voltage swings common in older New York buildings, and you end up replacing a $45 knockoff every year instead of buying the real board once. For simpler items like keypad overlays, photoelectric sensors, and gate edge strips, quality aftermarket equivalents work fine and save real money. We’ll tell you which is which before we write the price.

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad accepts some codes but not others. This usually means one relay channel on the control board is sticking. The board still powers up, so everything looks fine until one tenant’s code stops tripping the gate. It’s an early warning, not a total failure.
- Telephone entry rings but won’t open the gate when you press 9. The voice chip and the relay driver are separate circuits. A dead relay driver lets the audio work perfectly while the open signal never reaches the gate operator.
- Gate opens on its own at odd hours. We see this with failing under-ground loop detectors or a keypad with moisture inside the housing. In New York’s freeze-thaw winters, hairline cracks in keypad housings let in water that causes phantom triggers.
- Display screen shows scrambled characters or goes blank. The LCD driver board or the power supply capacitor is on its way out. Capacitors age faster in buildings with older electrical panels and surging power, which describes a lot of pre-war New York construction.
- You hear a hum from the cabinet but nothing responds. The power supply is delivering voltage but the main control board isn’t processing. Sometimes reseating the ribbon cables buys time; more often the board needs replacement.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what DoorKing access control installation typically runs in New York, parts and labor included:
- Keypad or card reader replacement: $350 – $650
- Control board replacement (1830-series or similar): $450 – $900
- Full telephone entry system (new 1834/1838 with keypad): $1,200 – $1,850
- Power supply replacement: $250 – $450
- Add-on keypad or reader to existing system: $400 – $750
The range depends on how much of the existing wiring we can reuse, whether the mounting post or wall box needs retrofitting, and which board revision your system runs. Every quote is written before any work starts, and it covers the part, the labor, the programming of all existing codes and phone numbers, and testing with your gate operator. If a DoorKing access control repair fails within 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s stamped on your invoice, not buried in fine print.

DoorKing access control systems run on 24-volt DC at the board, but the incoming side carries 120-volt AC, and the gate operator itself can deliver serious torque. If the gate arm is attached to a functioning operator, you’re working next to pinch points and moving steel. We don’t recommend opening a DoorKing cabinet and swapping boards as a weekend project unless you’re comfortable with a multimeter and you’ve shut down the correct breaker. What you can safely check: whether the keypad lights up at all, whether the breaker tripped, and whether any obvious water has gotten inside the housing. If the keypad is dead, the board is humming, or the gate behaves erratically, call us at (845) 259-0242. Dean will talk you through what he thinks is wrong before we ever roll a truck.
FAQs
A DoorKing access control installation in New York typically lasts 10 to 15 years, though boards in buildings with dirty incoming power or coastal salt air can fail in 7 to 8. The keypad and housing are the first things to go, while the control board itself usually holds up longest. Call (845) 259-0242 if your system is older and acting up, and we’ll assess whether a repair or full replacement makes more financial sense.
Sometimes yes, when the problem is a blown capacitor, a cold solder joint, or a corroded relay socket. We carry replacement capacitors and relays for common DoorKing boards and can often fix a board in the cabinet on the first visit. If the board has water damage or a fried power supply section, replacement is cheaper and more reliable than repair.
Most straightforward DoorKing access control installations in New York take 2 to 4 hours, including removing the old unit, mounting and wiring the new one, programming codes and phone numbers, and testing the gate through every trigger. Telephone entry retrofits that require new conduit or trenching can stretch to a full day. We’ll give you a written time window before we start.
Yes, we stock DoorKing keypads, control boards, power supplies, and relays on our service trucks, along with common parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. It means we can typically complete a DoorKing access control installation on the first visit rather than ordering parts and coming back next week. Call (845) 259-0242 to confirm we have your specific part in stock, and we’ll quote the installed price right over the phone.
