We install and replace BFT access control systems across New York’s five boroughs and surrounding areas, and a full keypad, card reader, or intercom swap typically runs $585 to $1,450 installed depending on the model and wiring complexity. Most replacements are done the same visit because our trucks carry the common BFT control boards, readers, and power supplies. The usual call starts with a keypad reader that’s gone dark, a gate that won’t respond to a fob, or a controller that clicks but never actually opens the gate. Tell us what the gate is doing, or not doing, and Dean and the crew will give you a real number before we hang up.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT’s access control line breaks down into a few families, and the part numbers matter more than most owners expect. The RIGEL series covers standalone keypads and card readers used on residential swing gates. The PHEBE and THALIA series are the control boards themselves, and the MITTO remote kits handle the fob side. What trips people up: a BFT keypad that looks identical to another BFT keypad can be wired for 24V DC in one building and 12V AC in the next, and installing the wrong one fries the board on first power-up. We verify the voltage and the existing board revision before ordering anything, and we carry OEM BFT boards along with quality aftermarket power supplies that match the original specs. Portcullis Gate Repair New York is an independent service provider, not a BFT dealer or affiliate, which means we recommend the right part instead of the most expensive one.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing
- The keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move. This is usually the output relay on the BFT control board wearing out, or a failed wiring connection between the board and the gate operator. The keypad thinks it sent the signal, but the signal never arrived.
- Fobs work intermittently, especially in cold or wet weather. BFT controllers run fine in New York winters when housed properly, but moisture intrusion into an outdoor enclosure corrodes the terminals. Intermittent behavior in rain or snow is almost always a compromised housing or a failing power supply.
- The reader stays lit but won’t recognize any fob or card. The antenna in the reader itself has failed. This is a reader replacement, not a programming issue, and adding new fobs won’t fix it.
- The gate opens on its own or cycles repeatedly. A failing BFT board can send phantom signals, which is a security issue and also burns out the gate operator motor faster.
- You hear a hum from the enclosure but the system is dead. That’s the power supply failing under load. It has enough juice to hum but not enough to run the board and the reader at the same time.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York, a BFT keypad or card reader replacement without board work usually lands between $585 and $920 installed. A full control board and reader swap runs $980 to $1,450 when we’re pulling new wire or replacing a corroded enclosure. The range comes down to three things: whether new wire needs to be pulled, whether the existing enclosure is salvageable, and which BFT board revision is already in place. You get the written price before any work starts, and the price you agree to is the price you pay. Every BFT access control installation carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s written on the invoice, not a verbal assurance.
DIY or Call Us?
Access control work is low-voltage, so you’re not dealing with line voltage, but the honest truth is that BFT boards and readers are easy to damage if you guess wrong on voltage, polarity, or connector pins. You can safely check the obvious: confirm the breaker for the gate circuit is on, make sure the enclosure door is fully closed and latched, and look for visible water staining or chewed wiring. Past that, wiring a new reader into a BFT control board without confirming the board revision and voltage is how a $200 part becomes an $1,100 repair. If you’re in New York and the keypad or fob system is acting up, call us at (845) 259-0242 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing before we ever schedule a truck.
FAQs
A properly installed BFT access control system in New York typically lasts 8 to 12 years, though coastal areas like the Rockaways or waterfront neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Staten Island see more corrosion and shorter component life, often 6 to 9 years on the reader and power supply. The control board itself usually outlasts the outdoor components. Call (845) 259-0242 if you’re seeing early failures, because the cause is usually fixable at the enclosure level.
Sometimes the power supply can be rebuilt or the terminals cleaned and resealed, but a failed BFT keypad antenna or a burned output relay isn’t a practical repair, and replacement is the honest route we recommend. The exception is corrosion on wiring terminals, which we can often clean and treat during a service call. Call (845) 259-0242 for an exact diagnosis; the estimate is free.
A straightforward keypad or reader swap on an existing BFT controller takes 45 to 90 minutes, and a full board and reader replacement with new wiring typically takes 2 to 3 hours. We arrive with the common BFT parts already on the truck, so there’s no second visit in most cases. We’ll give you a real arrival window before we dispatch, and a live person answers around the clock.
Our trucks carry common BFT control boards, keypads, card readers, and power supplies, plus compatible aftermarket equivalents where they perform as reliably as the OEM part. Uncommon board revisions or specialty readers may take a day or two to source, and we’ll tell you that before we schedule. Call (845) 259-0242 and we can check stock while you’re on the phone.
The Kingswell Way is how we run every job in New York: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it, put the guarantee in writing, and come back if it fails. We also carry parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates, so if the BFT system ties into an operator from another brand, we can typically handle the whole repair in one stop. Call (845) 259-0242 for a free estimate on BFT access control installation, and we’ll have a live person on the line.
