We stock and install Mighty Mule-compatible keypads and intercom units across New York, with most keypad replacements running $185 – $390 installed and intercom repairs typically landing between $240 – $520 depending on the model and wiring condition. Same-day service is available for keypad swaps in most of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx when we have the part on the truck, which we usually do. The typical call goes like this: the keypad works sometimes, then stops responding to certain codes, then the gate only opens from the remote, and by the time we arrive the homeowner has been standing at the curb twice in one week keying in a dead display. This page covers what fails, what it costs, and what we actually do when we show up.
Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To
Most Mighty Mule keypads fall into two families: the older MMK series (the MMK2010 and the solar-ready MMK2000) and the newer M3 series keypads that ship with the MM371W, MM372W, and MM571W gate openers. The intercom side is less standardized: Mighty Mule has sold several rebadged intercom kits over the years, and in New York we see a lot of apartment-building installs where the intercom was wired into a Mighty Mule control board by a local contractor rather than sold as a matched set. Here’s the compatibility gotcha that costs owners money: the MMK2000 and MMK2010 look nearly identical from ten feet away, but they use different connector pinouts, and we’ve replaced keypads that a previous owner or handyman bought new-in-box from an online marketplace only to find they were the wrong revision for the board. The control board label is the truth: open the cover, find the model number printed on the board itself, not the keypad housing. We also stock quality aftermarket universal keypads that work cleanly with Mighty Mule boards as a lower-cost option, but for properties where the keypad is the primary entry method, we recommend the OEM unit: the aftermarket units work, but the button membranes wear faster in New York’s freeze-thaw winters.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Dead or dim display on the keypad. The LED segments fade first, then go entirely. This is almost always the keypad’s internal board or a corroded ribbon connection, not the gate operator.
- Intermittent code acceptance. The gate opens on the third or fourth try, or only when you press one specific button especially hard. The membrane contacts are worn out, and this gets worse, not better.
- Gate opens from the remote but not the keypad. The operator and receiver are fine; the keypad stopped sending its signal. This is the most common Mighty Mule keypad failure we replace in New York.
- Intercom buzzes or hums but no voice comes through. A corroded wire connection or a failed speaker element inside the intercom housing. In shoreline neighborhoods and older co-ops, we see salt air and decades of humidity eat these connections regularly.
- Keypad works after a rain, fails after a dry spell (or the reverse). Moisture is intermittently bridging or breaking a weak solder joint. It will eventually fail for good.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York, a Mighty Mule keypad replacement runs $185 – $390 installed: the keypad itself is $85 – $180 depending on model and OEM versus aftermarket, and labor is $100 – $210. Intercom units range from $240 – $520 installed, with more of that cost being labor because the wiring often needs to be traced, re-terminated, or replaced where New York weather has gotten into the run. We don’t hand you a parts-only price and then add surprise labor at the door. The Kingswell Guarantee says it plainly: the price is written down before we touch a single wire, and it includes the part, the install, the programming to your existing board, and the cleanup. If that repair fails inside 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

If the keypad is completely dead, you can safely check the obvious: make sure the keypad’s batteries aren’t the problem (many Mighty Mule keypads still use AA or 9V batteries even when wired), and confirm the breaker to the gate operator hasn’t tripped. That’s where we’d stop. A keypad that’s wired into the Mighty Mule control board carries low voltage, but it’s still a live board, and a short from a hastily stripped wire can take out the entire operator, which turns a $250 keypad swap into a $900 operator replacement. The same rule applies to intercom wiring: if you didn’t run it originally, don’t guess. Call (845) 259-0242 and tell us what the gate is doing or not doing. We’ll give you a real number before we hang up.
FAQs
Three to seven years, and in New York they tend to land on the shorter end because of winter salt, freeze-thaw moisture cycles, and direct sun on black plastic housings in the summer. We replace keypads on Long Island and Queens gates more often than on the same models in dryer climates.
Sometimes. A basic membrane or terminal cleaning can extend a keypad’s life for a season, but once the membrane contacts or the internal board has failed, repair costs land within $40 – $70 of a new unit, and a new unit carries a longer service life. We’ll tell you which is which before any money changes hands.
A straightforward keypad replacement is done in 45 – 90 minutes, including programming the codes and testing with your remote. An intercom replacement runs one to two hours if the existing wiring is in good shape, and longer if we’re tracing and re-pulling wire in an older New York building.
Yes. We carry MMK2000 and M3-series compatible keypads as standard truck stock, along with universal keypads that work with LiftMaster, Ghost Controls, and DoorKing boards for mixed-property situations. Intercom units are often ordered same-day or next-day depending on the model. Call (845) 259-0242 for availability and an exact installed price.
