DoorKing welding and fabrication in New York typically runs $400 – $1,100 installed, depending on whether we’re repairing a cracked hinge mount, reinforcing a bent gate frame, or fabricating a replacement bracket from scratch. Most jobs are done same-day or next-day because we keep raw steel stock and a mobile welder on the truck. The usual way an owner discovers this problem: the gate starts dragging on one corner, or it binds partway through its swing, and a close look shows a fatigue crack that’s been growing for months.
The honest picture is this: DoorKing builds dependable operators, but the gate itself is often the weak link. Steel frames flex every time the operator pushes or pulls them, and after enough New York winters with road salt and freeze-thaw cycles, welds crack and hinge plates tear loose. You don’t usually need a new operator. You need someone who can weld the steel back to square and reinforce it so it doesn’t fail again in eighteen months.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
Welding and fabrication work applies to the gate structure and mounting hardware rather than the operator’s internal circuit boards, so it spans most DoorKing installations in New York: slide gates running the 1601, 1602, and 6500 series operators, swing gates on the 6002 and 6003 actuator arms, and barrier gates where the arm itself has been hit and bent. On slide gates, the most common fabrication job is repairing or replacing the V-track brackets and the steel chain brackets that bolt to the gate frame. On swing gates, we typically see cracked hinge welds and torn actuator mounting plates.
Identifying the right part comes down to measuring the existing steel: thickness of the gate frame tubing, spacing of the hinge bolt holes, and the width of the chain bracket channel. DoorKing uses some proprietary hole patterns on their chain brackets, which is where we lean on a fabrication approach rather than a shelf part. We cut and drill new steel to match the DoorKing pattern exactly. This is the honest difference between an OEM bracket and a fabricated one: the OEM part is fine when it fits, but many New York gates were custom-welded by a local installer years ago, and no off-the-shelf bracket lines up. When that’s the case, fabrication is the correct fix, not a compromise.
We are an independent service provider and not affiliated with DoorKing. We stock door-compatible hardware for most of their popular series, and we also carry parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems.

Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate scrapes or drags on one end. This usually means a hinge weld has sagged or the frame has twisted at a crack. The operator keeps working, but it’s pushing against added resistance, which shortens its life.
- You can see a crack in the steel near a hinge or mounting plate. Cracks start small, often at the edge of a weld bead, and grow with every gate cycle. A hairline crack near a hinge is a repair in the $300 – $450 range today and a full hinge replacement in the $600 – $800 range if it tears out completely.
- The gate shudders or jerks when it starts moving. That’s often loose or cracked mounting hardware transferring vibration instead of smooth force. The operator’s limit switches may be fine; the steel it’s bolted to is moving.
- A weld bead looks rusty or flaking while the rest of the gate looks solid. That rust line is where moisture has gotten under a failing weld. In New York, salt-laden air near the coast and road salt carried on tires both accelerate this.
- The gate doesn’t close squarely against the stop or latch. When a frame member bends or a hinge shifts, the gate loses its original geometry. Re-welding straightens the geometry, but it needs someone who understands the load path, not just someone who can run a bead.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York, expect these installed ranges for DoorKing-related welding and fabrication:
- Cracked weld repair, single hinge or bracket: $250 – $400
- Fabricate and install a new chain bracket or V-track bracket: $300 – $500
- Reinforce a cracked gate frame (add gusset plates): $400 – $700
- Fabricate a replacement hinge set on a swing gate: $500 – $800
- Straighten and re-weld a bent slide gate frame: $600 – $1,100
Every one of those prices is quoted in writing before any work starts, which is the Kingswell Way: the price before the work, a real arrival window, a clean job site, and a written guarantee on the repair. For welding work, we stand behind the repair for a full 365 days under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If a weld fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
The range within any one job comes down to a few things: how much steel has to be cut out and replaced, whether we need to remove the gate from its hinges to weld it properly on the ground, and whether the surrounding steel is still thick enough to hold a new weld or needs a plate scabbed over it. We tell you which situation you’re in before we start, and the number doesn’t change at the door.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: look for visible cracks along the hinge welds, feel for play in the gate when it’s closed and latched, and watch whether the gate rides level on its track or sags on one side. You should not try to weld a gate frame yourself unless you’re an experienced welder with the right equipment. A bad weld on a moving gate is worse than no weld at all; it fails suddenly and leaves a several-hundred-pound gate hanging or dragging. Beyond the safety issue, welding on a gate that’s still connected to an operator risks frying the control board if the ground clamp is placed poorly.
Dean Prescott has been working steel and gates for years, starting with sheet metal and welding training at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before moving his tools east. He keeps a notebook of gate layouts in his truck and sketches every job before quoting it, a habit from an old foreman who believed a drawing was worth more than a promise. If you’re not sure whether your gate needs a weld or a full replacement, tell us what it’s doing and we’ll give you a real number before we hang up. Call (845) 259-0242.
FAQs
A properly welded and reinforced gate repair in New York typically lasts 5 to 10 years before the surrounding steel fatigues again. The original welds often fail because they were never stress-relieved or the gate wasn’t reinforced at the high-load points. We back every weld for 365 days, and if it fails inside that window, the return visit is free. Call (845) 259-0242 to have a weld inspected before it fails.
A cracked weld can be repaired in most cases as long as the surrounding steel is still thick enough to hold a new weld. We grind out the old crack, weld it, and typically add a gusset plate to spread the load. If the steel is rusted thin across a wide area, replacement becomes the more honest long-term answer, and we’ll show you why before any work begins. Call (845) 259-0242 for an on-site assessment.
Most single-bracket or hinge weld repairs take 1 to 2 hours once the gate is secured and prepped. A full frame straightening or multi-point fabrication job can take half a day. We give you a real arrival window and finish the work in one visit whenever the gate can be safely welded in place. Call (845) 259-0242 and we’ll tell you the window for your specific repair.
We stock common steel stock, gusset plates, and bracket material on the truck, and we drill or cut to match DoorKing’s hole patterns on site. If an OEM DoorKing bracket is the right call, we’ll source it. If a fabricated piece is the better fit, we’ll make it. Call (845) 259-0242 with your model number and we’ll tell you which path applies before we come out.
