Most DoorKing hinge and roller replacements in New York run between $380 and $720 installed, depending on whether it’s a single cantilever hinge set or the full roller truck assembly on a sliding gate. We stock common DoorKing-compatible hinge and roller parts on our trucks, so we can usually complete the swap the same day we diagnose it. Homeowners typically catch this failure by ear first: a gate that grinds, shudders mid-travel, or drops a half-inch and starts dragging across the concrete. By the time it’s visible, the wheel or hinge pin has been eating itself for a while.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
DoorKing builds two distinct gate types, and the hinge and roller requirements are completely different between them. Swing gates use heavy barrel hinges at the post and gate frame, while sliding gates ride on roller trucks: steel brackets holding sealed ball-bearing wheels that carry the gate along a V-track or flat rail. The compatibility gotcha is that DoorKing sliding gates come in both V-track and flat-track configurations, and the roller you need depends on which rail is already in the ground. Put a flat roller on a V-track and it’ll bind; put a V-groove roller on flat steel and it’ll wander off line within weeks.
Most DoorKing 9050, 9100, and 1601 swing operators pair with their respective heavy-duty gate, and the hinge sets are sized by gate weight and panel width. A 14-foot steel gate needs a larger pin diameter than a 10-foot aluminum one. We take measurements on site: pin diameter, leaf thickness, and overall bracket height. For DoorKing specifically, OEM parts are well made but often have a two-to-three-week lead time. Quality aftermarket equivalents from suppliers who build to the same pin and plate dimensions are usually in stock locally and carry the same service life. We’ll quote you both options and let you decide which makes more sense for your schedule.
Portcullis Gate Repair is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DoorKing. We do stock parts for other major brands too, including LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls, so if your property has mixed-brand hardware, one truck can usually handle it all.

Signs Your DoorKing Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate sags at the free end. A worn hinge pin or elongated hinge barrel lets the gate drop, usually a quarter-inch to a full inch. That sag puts load on the operator arm and accelerates wear on the actuator. Fix the hinge before it takes out the operator with it.
- Scraping or grinding during travel. On sliders, this is almost always a seized or flat-spotted roller wheel. The roller stops rolling and starts skidding along the rail, grinding flat spots into the steel. The sound is unmistakable once you hear it.
- A rhythmic thump with each pass. That’s a roller with a dead bearing or a flat spot hitting the same point in its rotation every time. The thump stops when the gate stops, but the damage keeps compounding.
- Visible wear on the roller or hinge pin. Look at the pin or wheel. If it’s grooved, galled, or has visible metal flake around it, the hardened surface is gone and lubrication won’t save it. This is a replacement, not a service call.
- The gate shudders or jerks near the end of travel. As rollers wear, the gate loses smooth support and the operator works harder to compensate. That jerking motion puts stress on the chain, the operator, and the limit switch. New York winters with salt and freeze-thaw cycles accelerate this wear.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York, expect to pay $380 to $720 for a DoorKing hinge and roller replacement, parts and labor included. A basic single-wheel roller truck swap lands at the low end. A full hinge set replacement on a heavy swing gate, or replacing all four roller trucks on a long commercial slider, runs higher. The main driver is whether the rail itself is still true or has been chewed up by the failed roller; if the track needs repair or replacement, that’s an additional line item we’ll put in writing before we start.
Every job includes the parts, labor, alignment, and a written guarantee on the repair. The price is quoted and agreed before any work starts, so there’s no surprise invoice when the gate is already in pieces. As a Kingswell company, we work to the same standard on every call: written price first, real arrival window, clean job site, and a written guarantee. If the repair fails inside 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. Dean Prescott sketches every gate layout before quoting, so we’re not guessing at what the job involves.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
A sliding gate roller carries the entire weight of the gate, and a swing gate hinge holds it under both static and dynamic load. When they fail, the gate can bind, fall off its track, or swing free in a way that injures someone. Replacing these parts means supporting a gate that weighs anywhere from 300 to 1,500 pounds, and if the gate shifts during the swap, you’re in a pinch point with no good way out. We don’t recommend DIY replacement for hinges or rollers on gates this heavy. What you can safely do is check the rail for debris, look for visible wear, and take photos. Then call us and describe what you’re seeing. “Tell me what the gate is doing or not doing and I’ll give you a real number before we hang up.” That’s how Dean runs every call.
FAQs
In New York’s climate, expect 7 to 12 years from original DoorKing rollers and 10 to 15 from hinges, with coastal salt air and winter road treatment shortening that at the low end. Rollers fail before hinges because the bearings are sealed units that eventually lose their grease and take on moisture. If your gate is past year 8 and starting to sound rough, it’s cheaper to replace rollers before they damage the track.
No. The hardened surface on a hinge pin or roller wheel cannot be re-machined in the field, and drilling out an elongated hinge barrel to fit an oversize pin weakens the bracket. Once the wear surfaces are gone, replacement is the only repair that lasts. Call (845) 259-0242 and describe what you’re seeing; we’ll quote the replacement honestly.
A standard DoorKing roller truck swap takes one to two hours, and a full hinge set on a swing gate runs two to three. If the track or post is damaged, the job grows; we’ll tell you before we start and put the full price in writing.
We stock common DoorKing-compatible rollers and hinge sets on our trucks, so most New York jobs are done same day. Unusual sizes or specialty models may take a few days to source, and we’ll give you a straight answer on timing before we quote. Estimates are free; call (845) 259-0242.
