When the weld on your Linear gate operator bracket, hinge, or mounting plate fails, you need a fabricator who understands the load that gate puts on metal every single day. We stock Linear-compatible weldments and fabricate replacements on site for most models, with typical installed prices running $275 – $600 depending on the part and how much of the surrounding frame has to be rebuilt. In most New York neighborhoods we can have a technician out the same day you call because we carry raw steel stock and a mobile welder on the truck.
The way owners usually find this problem is not subtle. The gate starts sagging a half-inch at the latch end. Then it drags on the driveway or the walkway. Then the operator starts laboring, and one morning you hear a scraping sound that was not there before. By the time a weld actually snaps, you have usually been living with the warning signs for weeks. Dean Prescott has seen gates in New York held together by little more than optimism and cable ties, and by then the repair is bigger than it needed to be.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear’s swing-gate operator lineup shares common mounting geometry across the LRA, SWR, and SWD series, but the weldments are not all interchangeable. The LRA residential arm uses a post-mount bracket with a 3/8-inch pivot bolt, while the heavier SWD slide-gate models ride on a rack-and-pinion drive that bolts to a welded steel rail, and the rail tolerances differ between the SWD and the older SWR by about an eighth of an inch. You cannot fudge that with washers.
Here is the compatibility gotcha we run into constantly in New York: Linear changed the bolt-hole pattern on the LRA-series actuator bracket somewhere around 2016, and the newer bracket will not drop onto an older gate post without re-drilling or a fabricated adapter plate. We would rather weld you a fresh bracket matched to your post than drill extra holes that weaken the post. The label on the operator arm tells you the series, and a quick measurement across the pivot holes tells us the rest.
For the decision between OEM and aftermarket: Linear OEM brackets are fine, but they are built to a price point. A fabricated bracket from 1/4-inch steel with proper gusseting will outlast the OEM part, especially in New York where salt air and freeze-thaw cycles work on every exposed weld. We fabricate to the original mounting pattern, so you are never locked out of a future OEM swap.
Portcullis Gate Repair New York is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Linear, Nortek, or Nice. We stock Linear-compatible parts and fabricate what is not on the shelf.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags at the free end. When the hinge welds or the post bracket start to fatigue, the gate’s weight pulls the unsupported end downward, and the gap at the latch grows. That sag is the part talking.
- You hear a creak or groan during the first few feet of travel. Metal on metal under load makes noise before it fails, and a weld that is cracking will flex microscopically with each cycle, making a sound you can hear long before you see the crack.
- Fresh rust staining below a weld joint. In New York, road salt and humidity get into hairline cracks and weep out as rust streaks. If you see orange weeping from a weld, the crack is already there.
- The operator runs but the gate hesitates or stalls. A broken or flexing bracket changes the mechanical advantage the operator expects, so the motor works harder at the same point in every cycle. The board may even throw a force-error code.
- The gate post leans or shifts at the base. That usually means the post-to-frame weld or the embedment itself has let go. The post moves, everything attached to it moves, and the operator is now fighting a moving target.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York, a fabricated replacement bracket or hinge plate for a Linear swing-gate setup typically runs $275 – $450 installed. A full post replacement with new base plate and weld-out, which some jobs need when the corrosion has climbed the post, runs $450 – $600. Slide-gate rack rail repair lands between $300 and $550 depending on rail length and how many anchor tabs have failed.
| Job | Typical New York Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Fabricated bracket or hinge plate (single) | $275 – $450 |
| Post replacement with welded base plate | $450 – $600 |
| Slide-gate rack rail repair | $300 – $550 |
| Custom adapter plate for 2016+ LRA on older post | $200 – $375 |
Every number above is a quoted-and-agreed price before we touch a single bolt. That is the Kingswell Way, and it is not a franchise poster slogan. It is a written commitment on every invoice: the price, the arrival window, the guarantee. We tell you what it costs, we show up when we said, we leave the site cleaner than we found it, and the repair carries a written 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
What drives the range in New York specifically comes down to two things: how deep the original welds were made and how many salt seasons the steel has absorbed. A gate welded properly to clean steel is a one-hour job to repair. A gate where the original installer painted over scale and rust has to be ground back to clean metal before any new weld means anything.

You can safely inspect a weld with your eyes and a flashlight. Look for cracks in the paint, rust weeping, and daylight between the bracket and the post. What you should not do is grab a grinder and start re-welding a loaded gate yourself. A gate under tension stores energy, and when a weld fails completely that energy releases fast. We have seen fingers pinched and worse from a gate that shifted while someone was working on the hinge side. This is not one of those jobs where a YouTube video makes you qualified.
If the part is a bracket, plate, or hinge and the gate is already blocked and de-energized, a confident welder with the right machine can do it. But most New York owners do not own a 220V welder or the clamps to hold a 200-pound gate while the weld cools. That is why we carry the equipment to you. Call (845) 259-0242 and tell us what the gate is doing, or not doing. Dean Prescott will give you a real number before you hang up.
FAQs
A properly fabricated and welded bracket or hinge plate in New York lasts 8 – 12 years, while thin OEM brackets often last 4 – 6 before fatigue cracks appear. The difference is material thickness and weld penetration, plus whether the fabricator removed all rust and mill scale before welding. Call (845) 259-0242 and we will tell you honestly which category your gate is in.
Sometimes, but only if the surrounding steel is still sound and the crack has not spread past the heat-affected zone. Most of the time we cut out the old weld, grind back to clean metal, and weld fresh, because welding over a crack just moves the failure point. The price for a repair is a written quote before we start, always.
A single bracket or hinge plate takes 2 – 3 hours including fabrication, weld-out, and cooling. A full post replacement with base plate runs half a day. We arrive with the truck stocked, so most jobs are done in one visit with the gate operational before we leave.
We stock the common Linear-compatible brackets and hinge assemblies on the truck, and we keep raw steel stock for the custom weldments. We also stock parts for the other major brands we service: LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls. If it is on the truck, we install it same day.
